Stefan Herman (Bio)
Stefan Hermann is the local founder and executive director of Boys to Men Central California Coast. His passion and vision of working with boys to facilitate their successful transition to adulthood came out of 10 years of involvement with men’s work, and from his role as an advocate against domestic violence.
His efforts mentoring young people locally include three and a half years coordinating and implementing the Santa Barbara-area high school and junior high school dating violence prevention program, SHARe … The Word, which uses a peer education approach. He also co-designed and ran the M.A.S.K. anger management program at Rincon High School in Carpinteria and Santa Barbara High School. Within Boys to Men International (BTM), Stefan recently spearheaded an international conference in San Diego, planning the expansion of BTM to new areas. Additionally, he directs BTM’s leadership development program.

As a certified co-leader of the ManKind Project International (www.mkp.org), Stefan contributes to weekend-long men’s initiation trainings for up to 40 men and 40 staff in each weekend. He has been personally involved in initiating over 1500 men into a new awareness around their masculinity and recently received the Ron Hering “Mission of Service” Award, presented to those individuals involved with the ManKind Project for living their mission goals in everyday life.

As a certified kundalini yoga teacher for the past five years, Stefan has been organizing spiritual journeys to India and co-leading retreats with his wife Siddhi, a full-time yoga teacher and teacher trainer, with whom he also offers a prenatal parenting workshop.

In 1998, Stefan's work as a business coach was described in the article, “Trust Carries Added Value” in Germany’s best-selling newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung. The article refers to his work in the former East Germany and praises his  “F.U.T.U.R.E.S Initiative” at ZPR Rosenthal AG, a pulp production company with over 400 employees. The initiative was deemed one of the few cultural interventions that provided sustainable value for the company and its employees, helping to offset the cultural and political suppression historically suffered under communist rule.

Stefan is a former top-100 world-ranked professional tennis player and multiple West German champion, with wins over the likes of Boris Becker, various top-30 players, and Wimbledon champions. His continued connection and passion for tennis was expressed in 2000 by tying the Guinness Book record for the longest rally in tennis history (consecutive shots without error) at 12,646 shots in 6:45 hours.

After a foot injury ended his competitive tennis career in 1985, Stefan ran a successful sports management company for seven years, focusing on golf and tennis events in Germany and Malaysia. In 1992, he phased out of sports promotion and became a partner in a New Jersey-based corporate consulting firm. In 1994, he relocated with his wife and children from Germany to Santa Fe, New Mexico. Coaching became his new passion. Stefan’s work is often praised by business owners and executives, whom he supports in re-discovering their potential and passion. He has worked with executives and staff in Fortune 500 companies including Siemens AG, Bayer AG, Hoechst AG, GTE, and Eli Lilly & Company, as well as with small and mid-size businesses in both the USA and Europe. Stefan’s talent is in working with individuals and organizations to create distinctly successful and fulfilling futures. His books, Future Design, and The Future Journey were published in Germany in 1997 and 1998; his workshop, “Futuring” was established in various cities throughout Germany. In 2000 he left Santa Fe to head for Santa Barbara, California. Over the past 20 years Stefan has developed a unique coaching approach, which he calls “Total Awareness Coaching” (TAC). In recent years, he has used TAC to train many professionals in becoming effective coaches through his Santa Barbara-based “Coaches Club.”

Stefan also specializes in facilitating retreats and extensive cultural change initiatives for boards of directors, executive teams, and focus groups. In this capacity, he has worked with the Municipal Board of the City of Uppsala, Sweden, and KD Components in Carson City, Nevada. Locally, he’s been involved as a coach with the Carpinteria Chamber of Commerce, the Carpinteria Education Foundation, Santa Barbara-based Incubators 2000, the Santa Barbara Economic Development Forum, Mainstreet Architects of Ventura, as well as the executive team at Venoco Inc. in Carpinteria.

Stefan lives in Carpinteria, California, 10 miles south of Santa Barbara and 90 miles north of Los Angeles. He is married and father to six children, plus grandpa to little Sydney.
